Santos (Sandy) Alomar Conde, Sr. begins his fifth year on the Mets coaching staff and his 49th season in professional baseball...Served as the third base coach in 2007 until he was named bench coach on June 17, 2008...Was the Mets first base coach in 2006 and served as the Mets bench coach in 2005...Was the third base coach for the Colorado Rockies in 2003 and 2004...From 1991-2003, he was a member of the Chicago Cubs' organization...In 2002, he was the Cubs' first base coach...In 2000 and 2001, he was Chicago's bullpen coach...Prior to joining the major league staff, served nine seasons as Chicago's roving minor league instructor...In addition to his roving duties, he also worked as the club's Latin America Coordinator (1991-1994) and as the manager of the rookie-level affiliate at Fort Myers in 1995 and 1996...Was the interim manager at Iowa (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League in 1991 and managed 17 games for Williamsport (A) of the New York-Penn League late in the 1994 campaign...Joined the Padres' organization as a minor league coach in 1985 at Charleston (A) of the South Atlantic League...Was a coach on San Diego's major league staff from 1986-1990...Has been actively involved in winter league programs in Puerto Rico...Named the Manager of the Year with Santurce in 1986 and Ponce in 1993...Served as San Juan's General Manager during the 1999-2000 season...Following his playing career, he coached the Puerto Rican national team from 1979-1984...Played in 1,481 games in his major league career, which covered parts of 15 seasons from 1964-1978...Hit .245 for six different organizations (Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, Mets, Chicago White Sox, California Angels, New York Yankees and Texas Rangers)...Was selected to the American League All-Star team in 1970 with the Angels...Saw his only postseason action with the Yankees in 1976, playing in two games of New York's American League Championship Series victory over the Royals...Participated in 648 consecutive games from May 16, 1969-May 21, 1973...Set a big league mark in 1971 by going to the plate 739 times (689 at-bats) without being hit by a pitch...The record still stands today...Signed as a free agent by the Milwaukee Braves in 1960...Began his playing career in 1961 with Davenport (A) of the Midwest League...Earned Pioneer League Player of the Year honors with Boise in 1962...After spending most of the 1964 season with Denver (AAA) of the American Association, he made his major league debut with Milwaukee later that season...He and his wife, Maria, are the parents of three children and have six grandchildren...His sons, Roberto and Sandy, Jr. both made their major league debuts with the Padres in 1988, while Sandy, Sr. was on the coaching staff...Three of his brothers (Rafael, Demetrio and Antonio) played professional baseball.
