On July 30, 2009, the Kalamazoo Turn 2 programs set off for their annual year-end trip. Programs in attendance included Youth in Action, Proud to Be Me-Washington, the Kalamazoo Jeter's Leaders, T.R.A.M — Extra Innings at Derek's Dugout, and Proud to Be Me-Douglass. Over 125 participants and chaperones headed off to Chicago's U.S. Cellular Field to watch the New York Yankees take on the Chicago White Sox. While loading onto the charter buses, each student and chaperone were given a Turn 2 t-shirt to wear at the game, and a boxed lunch compliments of Harding's Market and the Pepsi Company.

During the bus ride, the younger children from T.R.A.M. and Proud to Be Me — Washington and Douglass enjoyed time with the older students of the Jeter's Leaders and Youth in Action programs. The trip provided the students with an opportunity to spend time together outside of their regularly scheduled mentoring sessions. To make the journey to Chicago even more enjoyable, all of the students were able to participate in games that allowed the students to win prizes.

Upon arrival at the game, a first for many of the students, everyone received their ticket, a food voucher, and a bottle of water for inside. Once the students got to their seats, they immediately began to show their support for Derek and the Yankees, even in hostile territory. Though the weather turned for the worse toward the end of the game, the students fought through it just as the Yankees did. With the Yankees down one run in the top of the ninth, they hit a homerun to tie the game! Unfortunately, even with all the students' cheers, the White Sox came back and scored in the bottom of the ninth to end the game. Though the Yankees didn't take home the win, the students enjoyed cheering on Derek and the team as they watched the close, exciting game.

As the students headed back on the bus they were given snacks and drinks for the trip home; another generous donation made by Dave Stevenson, a member of Turn 2's Resource Council. Just as they had on the way to the stadium, the students enjoyed mingling with all of the participants from the other programs on the trip home. When they arrived back in Kalamazoo, the students had one more surprise in store - they each received a gift bag filled with goodies from the Turn 2 Foundation! Everyone involved had a great time and is looking forward to the end of year trip in 2010.

Since its launch in 1996, the Turn 2 Foundation has awarded more than $23 million to create and support signature programs that motivate young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol and "Turn 2" healthy lifestyles. Learn more »
