The Pirates had reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter on the ropes in several innings, but could not land the knockout punch in a loss to the Cardinals. Jason Bay homered and Humberto Cota delivered an RBI single to provide the Bucs' offense.

Albert Pujols crushed his Major League-leading 12th home run in the first inning, and So Taguchi and Hector Luna each drove in a pair of runs in a victory over the Pirates. Chris Carpenter pitched out of some jams to last six innings for his third win.
