The Giants had won their last five Opening Day games entering this season, but a quiet offense saw that streak come to a halt. Barry Bonds doubled in his first at-bat and scored the Giants' lone run of the game, while Jason Schmidt had trouble keeping the Padres from leaving the yard.

Mike Piazza made his regular-season debut in a Padres uniform memorable, smacking a solo homer in his first at-bat to tie the game. Khalil Greene added a two-run shot to give San Diego ace Jake Peavy more than enough run support in his stellar Opening Day outing at PETCO Park.
