There was never any doubt that Tom Schieffer was Chief of the Mission. That's a title bestowed upon the head of one country's delegation to another nation, and Schieffer held it as the US Ambassador to Australia and Japan during George W. Bush's administration. But before Schieffer immersed himself in international diplomacy at the behest of his former business partner, there was no doubt he was the Chief of the Mission at the corner of Randol Mill and Ballpark Way.

All traits backed up by 324 wins, 5,714 strikeouts, seven no-hitters and induction into the Hall of Fame in 1999.

8/20/2014 | Ventura, Royals roll into series with Rangers

The last time the Royals were in first place this late in the season was in 2003, though they couldn't hold their lead and make the postseason. As Kansas City tries to ensure that history doesn't repeat itself, Yordano Ventura takes the hill against Colby Lewis and the Rangers on Friday.

8/19/2014 | Eovaldi out to finish off Rangers, keep Marlins rising

Staying above .500 has been a struggle this season for the Marlins, who will close out their homestand and their short series with the Rangers on Wednesday afternoon. Eovaldi will oppose Nick Martinez, a Miami native who hasn't been nearly as sharp this month.

8/19/2014 | Rangers force extras, but lack big hit in Miami

When it was over Tuesday night, the Rangers went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position, left 12 men on base and ended up losing, 4-3, in 10 innings. On a night when Mike Carp was going 0-for-5, Marlins No. 3 hitter Giancarlo Stanton brought the game to an end with a two-out RBI single to right off reliever Neftali Feliz.

8/19/2014 | Next Tuesday too optimistic a target date for Yu

The Rangers are backing off the idea of Yu Darvish returning to the rotation and pitching next Tuesday against the Mariners. Darvish is on the disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow, and he has not thrown a baseball since he tried to play catch a week ago in Arlington. Darvish did not travel with the Rangers for their two-game series with the Marlins.

Ice bucket mania is sweeping through the Rangers' clubhouse. Rangers outfielders Leonys Martin, Alex Rios and Shin-Soo Choo were the latest to get doused by ice water on Tuesday in the dugout at Marlins Park. They were challenged by none other than Choo's 9-year-old son, Alan.

8/17/2014 | Rookies Klein, Mendez an effective combo in bullpen

With three perfect innings in Saturday night's loss to the Angels, the Rangers' mostly inexperienced bullpen continued its recent hot streak -- and continued to give manager Ron Washington something to smile about.
