The Mets return to Citi Field on Tuesday for a two-game series with Oakland, and there will be a large number of fans rooting for the home team to swing for the fences.
Citi launched the Citi ThankYou Home Runs for Communities Program this season at Citi Field. Through the program, Citi is donating $2,000 to one of four tri-state area community partners each time a Mets player hits a home run at home.
The designated organizations are City Harvest, United Neighborhood Houses, USO of Metropolitan New York and the YMCA of Greater New York. Entering the A's series, the total stands at $66,000, thanks to 23 long balls by the home team at Citi Field and an initial donation of $20,000 by Citi split evenly among those four rotating benefactors.
"Giving back has always been important for me as a professional athlete who has the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of fans," said Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson, an active community leader who helped launch the program. "I am pleased to join Citi in supporting these important organizations that improve the lives of New Yorkers, and I am delighted to partner with Citi to add even more excitement to the on-field action at Citi Field."
Granderson has hit three of his homers at Citi Field so far this season, and his increased production since May 1 would seem to bode well for bigger numbers. Others have come from Lucas Duda (six), David Wright (four), Daniel Murphy and Chris Young (two), and Bobby Abreu, Andrew Brown, Eric Campbell, Ike Davis, Juan Lagares and Taylor Teagarden (one).
"This program is the latest instance of Citi and the Mets coming together to make a difference in our local New York City communities, and we are looking forward to a successful season at the ballpark and beyond," said Eileen Auld, tri-state regional director of Citi Community Development. "Thanks to the enthusiastic support of Curtis Granderson and the entire Mets organization, the Citi ThankYou Home Runs for Communities Program will have a meaningful impact for these organizations and the New Yorkers they each serve."
Additionally, further promotion of the program is through a "Citi Bike" race to Citi Field animation via Citi Vision. Each cause partner is represented by one of four bike riders. The winning bike determines which cause will receive the $2,000 for any homers hit that game.
The Citi ThankYou Home Runs for Communities Program serves as the centerpiece of the Citi Teammates in the Community program, a multiprogram initiative comprised of events, monetary donations and ticket opportunities that allow Citi to highlight its role as an enabler of progress and showcase the community partners as "stars" of the 2014 season.
This season, fans also have the ability to support New York community groups through the use of their Citi ThankYou points earned across their Citi credit card and banking relationships. ThankYou members can now redeem their ThankYou points to make a donation to a wide assortment of global and local charitable organizations, including the four listed here.
