Mets set spring reporting dates for players

NEW YORK -- The Mets have announced that their pitchers and catchers are set to report to Spring Training in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on Mon., Feb. 20.

Those players will be due to undergo physicals at Digital Domain Park, the club's spring home, on Feb. 21, with the first workout for pitchers and catchers set for Feb. 22.

Mets position players are scheduled to report by Feb. 25, with physicals set for Feb. 26 and the team's first full-squad workout slated for Feb. 27.

The 2012 season will mark the Mets' 24th spring in Port. St. Lucie, having moved into the newly completed facility for Spring Training 1988.

Mets will no longer field Gulf Coast League team

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets have dropped their entry in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League, the organization announced on Tuesday.

"For 2012, we will be conducting our three Rookie League teams in Kingsport, Tenn., and out of our facility in the Dominican Republic, and will not operate a team in the Gulf Coast League," the team said in a statement.

With the reduction, the Mets will operate eight Minor League clubs in 2012, including the rookie-level club in Kingsport and two teams in the Dominican Summer League. Those teams are typically used for Draft picks who sign out of high school and international signees.

The GCL Mets finished their 2011 season with a record of 27-29 (.482), in third place and 12 games behind the East division-leading GCL Marlins.

The GCL team used the club's Spring Training complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla., as its base of operations and entered the league in 1988.
