Mets dismiss clubhouse manager Samuels

NEW YORK -- The Mets announced Friday that they have dismissed longtime clubhouse manager Charlie Samuels for what the team called "conduct in violation of club policies." The team's decision, according to a statement, "is the result of a thorough internal investigation over the course of several months."

Earlier this month, the Mets suspended Samuels indefinitely amidst reported allegations of betting on baseball and other sports as part of an organized gambling ring, as well as allegations of using team funds to cover gambling and personal debts.

According to multiple published reports, Samuels, who has been with the Mets since 1976, recently admitted betting on baseball to an MLB investigator.

The Mets had no further comment on the issue.
