Mets sign righties Everts, Dessens

Relievers will compete for a spot in bullpen this spring

The Mets signed right-handers Clint Everts and Elmer Dessens on Friday. Everts got a Major League contract for 2010 -- terms of the deal were not disclosed -- while Dessens inked a Minor League deal with an invitation to Spring Training.

Everts went 8-1 with a 1.65 ERA and six saves at three levels of the Minor Leagues with the Nationals this past season, striking out 68 batters through 60 innings in 44 games. In seven seasons in the Minors since being the fifth overall pick by the Montreal Expos -- now the Nats -- in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, the 25-year-old is 23-32 with a 4.29 ERA in 164 games (49 starts).

Dessens, 38, posted a 3.31 ERA in 28 games for the Mets this past season, including a 1.89 ERA at Citi Field. For his 13-year career, he's 48-62 with a 4.53 ERA.
