Tiffany to display World Series trophy

New York store will show trophy from Oct. 16-22

NEW YORK -- The World Series trophy is one of the finer things in life. It is one the crown jewels of collective achievement and the object of desire for millions.

Tiffany & Co. is the Fifth Avenue sweet spot for those who appreciate the finer things in life. It is the home of the robin-egg blue box and the window on 57th Street that drew Holly Golightly's forlorn gaze during the 1961 classic "Breakfast at Tiffany's."

Now, a legendary prized possession and a legendary purveyor of prized possessions are about to meet. Tiffany & Co., maker of the World Series trophy, will salute Major League Baseball and commemorate this postseason by displaying the 2006 trophy in that same window from Oct. 16-22.

It will then be removed and readied for an imminent presentation to one of four teams still playing in the League Championship Series -- the A's and Tigers in the American League and the Cardinals and Mets in the National League. Once again, it will be going to yet another new world champion and its fans.

"This was part of the original deal with Tiffany & Co.," explained Tim Brosnan, Major League Baseball's executive vice president for business. "Part of the reason for having Tiffany & Co. create the trophy was that we wanted the real estate on Fifth Avenue.

"The World Series trophy is arguably one of the most famous prizes in the world. Tiffany & Co. is one of the most famous jewelers and silversmiths in the world. We thought it was a good deal for both of us. They produce objects at standards that only they can set, so we are happy that they are displaying our trophy until we can make its annual presentation at the World Series."

Major League Baseball first commissioned Tiffany & Co. to create its ultimate prize, officially named "The Commissioner's Trophy," in 2000. Tiffany artisans handcrafted the 24-inch-high trophy to feature 30 flags, one for each Major League club, with latitude/longitude lines symbolizing the world and 24-karat vermeil stitches representing those on a baseball. Etched on the base are the words, "Presented by the Commissioner of Baseball," along with the signature of Commissioner Bud Selig.

The World Series trophy was first awarded in 1967, when the Cardinals defeated the Red Sox in seven games. The trophy weighs approximately 30 pounds, and the baseball alone weighs more than 10 pounds. It is what this entire process is all about, along with those other objects of desire -- the championship rings that will be presented next spring.

Unlike the Stanley Cup, for example, the World Series trophy is not handed from one winner to the next over time. A new one is created each year by Tiffany & Co., which also crafts the Nextel Cup for NASCAR, the National Football League's Vince Lombardi Super Bowl trophy, the National Basketball Association's Larry O'Brien championship trophy and the U.S. Open Tennis Championship trophies.

"I can't even tell you what the numbers are, but that Tiffany location is probably one of the highest-traffic areas in the highest-traffic city in the country," Brosnan said. "Tiffany & Co. stands for excellence. It's a perfect venue for fans to enjoy it until we present our trophy."
