FLUSHING, N.Y. - The New York Mets and Live Nation today announced that the Dave Matthews Band will perform at Citi Field Friday, July 16 and Saturday, July 17.
Tickets go on sale to the general public Friday, February 26 at 10:00 a.m. online at www.507TIXX.com and by phone at 718-507-TIXX. Mets Season Ticket Holders will have access to a special two-day pre-sale that will be announced in the coming weeks.
Dave Matthews Band will be second artist to perform at Citi Field following Paul McCartney's historic three sold-out shows in July 2009.
"We pride ourselves on playing at some of the most unique venues in the world," said Matthews. "We're excited to play at Citi Field and continue the rock-n-roll tradition at the home of the Mets."
"We are thrilled that Dave Matthews Band is coming to Citi Field this July for what is becoming our annual summer concert event featuring the top acts in the world," said Jeff Wilpon, COO, New York Mets.
The Grammy Award-winning Dave Matthews Band has sold more than 15 million tickets for its concerts, and has been named the top-drawing American band in the world by Billboard. Pollstar named the group its "Top Act of the Decade" and Spinner dubbed them one of the "Top Artists of the 2000s." Dave Matthews Band has been nominated for "Album of the Year" and "Best Rock Album" at next month's 52nd Annual Grammy Awards.
The group will be touring Europe next month in support of its album, "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King," its first studio album in four years. Produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance), Big Whiskey has been hailed by Rolling Stone as the group's "heaviest album yet, both musically and emotionally," which went on to note: "Throughout, Carter Beauford beats out elaborate, propulsive grooves; bassist Stefan Lessard lays down Flea-style funk bass lines; violinist Boyd Tinsley plays cresting, intense runs; and Matthews mirrors Moore's saxophone lines with scatlike singing." Billboard, in a cover story on Dave Matthews Band, praised Big Whiskey as "its best album yet..."
Formed in Charlottesville, Va. in 1991, Dave Matthews Band has sold a collective 35 million units (CD and DVD combined). Dave Matthews Band is Carter Beauford (drums), Stefan Lessard (bass), Dave Matthews (vocals, guitar) and Boyd Tinsley (violin). Saxophonist LeRoi Moore, the fifth original founding member, passed away during the band's summer 2008 tour.
The Mets are continuing their musical tradition of hosting some of the biggest acts in music that began with the Beatles' legendary musical christening of Shea Stadium in 1965. The former home of the Mets hosted acts including Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, the Police, the Rolling Stones, and the Who. Paul McCartney and now Dave Matthews Band are keeping the rock-n-roll spirit going at the Mets' new home. The shows will be held rain or shine and are promoted by Live Nation.
