The New York Mets signed lefthanded pitcher Steven Matz, the 72nd overall selection in the 2009 First Year Player Draft. He will report to the rookie-level Gulf Coast Mets.

Matz, a senior at Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, NY, was New York's first pick in the 2009 First Year Draft. The 6-3, 195-pounder went 6-1 with a 0.47 ERA in seven starts. In 44.0 innings, he allowed 11 hits, 15 walks with 61 strikeouts.

Matz, 18, tossed a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and two walks in a complete game in the first round of the Class AA playoff on May 19th. He also went 2-2 with two runs and an RBI in that contest.

New York also signed its ninth round selection catcher Jeffrey Glenn from Winter Haven (FL) High School, the 13th round pick lefthanded pitcher Zachary Dotson from Effingham County (GA) High School, and 39th round selection righthanded pitcher Anthony Whitenton from Darton College (GA). Glenn, Dotson, and Whitenton will join Matz with the Gulf Coast Mets.
