Athletics agree to terms with Antonio Perez
A's also add Lou Merloni to list of Spring Training non-roster invites
OAKLAND -- The Oakland Athletics announced today the club has agreed to terms with infielder Antonio Perez on a one-year contract for the 2007 season, avoiding arbitration.
The A's also announced the club has agreed to terms with infielder Lou Merloni on a minor league contract and have invited him to Spring Training.
Perez batted .102 in 57 games with the A's last season, collecting 10 hits in 98 at bats. Seven of his hits were for extra bases, including five doubles, one triple and one home run. Perez started 24 games last season, including 20 at third base, three at shortstop and two at second base. He also made 18 pinch running appearances.
Merloni appeared in nine games for Cleveland last year after having his contract purchased from Triple-A Buffalo on May 17th. He batted .211 (4-for-19) with one RBI, a double, two walks and five strikeouts in nine games for the Tribe before being optioned back to Buffalo on June 11th.
Merloni has a career .271 batting average and 67 doubles, seven triples, 14 home runs and 125 RBI in 423 Major League games with Boston (1998-2003), San Diego (2003), Cleveland (2004; 06) and Los Angeles-AL (2005).
A's pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training on Friday, February 16 with the first workout scheduled for the next day. The remainder of the squad will report on Wednesday, February 21st with the first full squad workout set for February 22nd.
The A's will open Cactus League play on Thursday, March 1 against the Milwaukee Brewers in Maryvale. The team's annual FanFest is set for Saturday, January 27 at McAfee Coliseum beginning at 10:00 am.
