The New York Mets announced today that they have signed catcher Bobby Estalella and righthanded pitchers Jeremi Gonzalez and Jose Santiago to minor-league contracts and invited them to spring training.

In addition, the Mets have invited nine additional non-roster players to major-league spring training camp: righthanded pitchers Rafael Cova, Tim Lavigne, and Jason Scobie; catchers Drew Butera, Zac Clements, Aaron Hathaway, and Andy Wilson; infielder Brett Harper; and outfielder Lastings Milledge.

Estalella, 31, was out of baseball last season after going to spring training with the Cincinnati Reds. He spent 2004 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Toronto Blue Jays, batting a combined .185 (5-27) with two home runs and four RBI in 12 games.

Santiago, 31, appeared in four games with the Mets in 2005, posting a 3.18 ERA (two earned runs/5.2 innings). He also pitched in 29 games (17 starts) with Norfolk (AAA) of the International League, posting a 7-6 record with a 4.26 ERA (58 earned runs/122.2 innings).

Gonzalez spent 2005 in the Red Sox organization and was on Boston's major-league roster from May 2nd-May 26th and from July 4th through the end of the season. In 25 relief outings, the 31-year-old was 1-0 with a 5.57 ERA (26 earned runs/42.0 innings), while he was 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA (12 earned runs/14.0 innings) in three starts.

This brings the total of non-roster players in the Mets' major league camp to 27. New York will open spring training on Saturday, February 18th in Port St. Lucie, FL, when the first workout for pitchers and catchers will take place. The first full-squad workout will be on Thursday, February 23rd.
