ST. PETERSBURG -- David Wright is quickly becoming a popular All-Star pick.
In the week since Major League Baseball released its first All-Star Game ballot update, Wright has seen his lead at third base increase eightfold. Leading National League third basemen by just 32,086 votes a week ago, Wright has since expanded his lead to more than a quarter-million votes with a tally of 1,358,992.
Pablo Sandoval of the Giants ranks second among NL third basemen with 1.1 million votes in the balloting update released Tuesday. He is followed by David Freese of the Cardinals, Chipper Jones of the Braves and Placido Polanco of the Phillies.
"It's always a tremendous honor to go to the All-Star Game," Wright said after the first ballot update last week. "I'm very fortunate in that I've gotten to go to five. You never take anything for granted, because you never know which one is going to be your last one. It's a tremendous honor, and I think it's extra special when you get voted in by the fans. I'm very, very appreciative."

The Mets' best chance at a second All-Star may come from the pitching staff, with both R.A. Dickey and Johan Santana positioning themselves for possible assignments. Dickey in particular is a favorite to make the game, given his 4-0 record and 0.29 ERA over his last four starts.
