Mets agree to terms with supplemental first-round pick Kevin Plawecki
The New York Mets today announced they have agreed to terms with catcher Kevin Plawecki, the team’s supplemental first-round selection (35th overall pick) of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. Plawecki will report to Port St. Lucie, FL, for mini-camp.
Plawecki, 21, who bats and throws righthanded, hit .359 (80-223) with seven home runs and 47 RBI in 59 games for Purdue University this year. The 6-1, 215-pound native of Carmel, IN was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and the Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Plawecki is one of the three finalists for the Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the top NCAA Division I catcher.
Plawecki, one of two Purdue players to start every game this year, struck out eight times all season and 29 times in his three-year career. He was named First Team All-Big Ten for the second consecutive year, becoming only the third Boilermaker in school history to be a two-time First Team honoree.
