Though surgery was recommended, Jenrry Mejia will seek a second opinion. (Jeff Roberson/AP)

Jenrry Mejia has a complete medial collateral ligament tear in his right elbow, Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek discovered Monday in an MRI exam.

Dr. Altchek has recommended surgery, but the Mets announced Mejia is expected to seek a second opinion.

Megia, a 21-year-old right-hander, left his last start at Triple-A Buffalo after four innings with discomfort in the elbow and was flown to New York to be examined. In five starts for the Bisons this season, Mejia was 1-2 with a 2.86 ERA. He appeared in 33 games (three starts) for the Mets in 2010, going 0-4 with a 4.62 ERA.

He was originally signed by the Mets as an amateur free agent in 2007.
