PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- In their continuing effort to create a bullpen, the Mets have claimed veteran right-handed reliever Manny Acosta on waivers from the Braves. A person familiar with the working for the Mets said as much on Tuesday.

The Braves had reassigned Acosta, 28, to their Minor League camp. The Mets are expected to do the same.

Acosta pitched seven innings in six exhibition game appearances, allowing five runs on six hits.

Mets consider switching rotation order

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Mets have changed the sequence of their exhibition game rotation, perhaps with an eye toward changing what had been expected. John Maine, who was scheduled to start Wednesday, now will start Thursday instead. Nelson Figueroa, still with a chance to be the long man, is to start against the Marlins Wednesday instead.

A person with knowledge of the club's pitching plans said Tuesday that Jon Niese may be put in the third spot in the rotation, before Maine, and Oliver Perez, ineffective in his start against the Cardinals on Tuesday, would be the No. 5 starter.

Johan Santana will remain in Port St. Lucie when the team travels to the west coast of Florida Thursday. He is to throw a bullpen session Saturday.

Barajas still in limbo, Misch on waivers

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Rod Barajas, still not identified as the Mets' No. 1 catcher, still hasn't caught Pedro Feliciano or Frankie Rodriguez in a game. He's caught both in bullpen sessions, though. "I know K-Rod. I've faced him a lot," Barajas said. "So that's not bad. I think it'll be easier to catch him than hit him." ... The Mets told Pat Misch he would not make the team and placed him on waivers. Misch, 28, allowed merely two runs and 11 hits in 13 inninigs in seven games, including one start. ... Daniel Murphy twisted his right knee in a rundown in the fifth inning of the Mets' 9-4 loss to the Cardinals and was removed from the game. He said the injury wasn't serious. ... Alex Cora was hit in the right hip by a pitch by Chris Carpenter, leading off the first. He was replaced Russ Adams in the third.
