Davis named to AFL's Rising Stars Game

Mets first-base prospect has been offensive force in fall ball

11/03/09 1:20 PM EST

NEW YORK -- When the Mets staff assembled in Arizona last month, it did so at least partially to watch Ike Davis, the strapping, 22-year-old first baseman who has become a bright beacon on the club's horizon. Davis had a particularly productive game when the Mets higher ups were watching, and they came away impressed.

They are not alone in that regard evidently. Davis has been selected to participate in the 2009 Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Game on Saturday in Surprise, Ariz. Playing for the Surprise Rafters, Davis has been an offensive force. He is batting .340 with six doubles, three home runs and 10 RBIs in 50 at-bats. He has produced a .370 on-base percentage and a .640 slugging percentage in 12 games.

Davis, son of former Yankees and Twins reliever Ron Davis, was the Mets' selection in the first round of the 2008 First Year Player Draft and the 18th player drafted. After a modest first professional season -- he batted .256 with no home runs and 17 RBIs in 215 at-bats with the Mets' Brooklyn affiliate in the Class A New York-Penn League, he distinguished himself in 2009. Davis batted .298 with 71 RBIs, 54 extra-base hits -- 20 of them home runs -- a .524 slugging percentage and .381 on-base average in 114 games (429 at-bats), splitting his season between the St. Lucie Mets of the Florida State League, the organization's most advanced Class A affiliate, and the Double-A Binghamton Mets.
