NEW YORK -- Jose Reyes is to undergo surgery in his right leg on a date not yet determined, the Mets said Monday. The procedure is to eliminate scar tissue around the accessory hamstring tendon. The 26-year-old shortstop ruptured the tendon, behind the knee in May.He will not require surgery for the separate hamstring muscle tear he suffered last last month while rehabbing the leg.
Reyes, whose season ended May 20, appeared in merely 36 games, accumulating 147 at-bats and batting batted .279 with 18 runs, 15 RBI, 11 stolen bases and two triples.
After the more recent injury, people involved with neither the Mets nor medicine, speculated Reyes would be hard pressed to return by the beginning of the 2010 season. Since then people within the organization have suggested that probably isn't the case.
The Mets provided no prognosis Monday.
While speaking to reporters Monday, club COO Jeff Wilpon reiterated that the tear of the tendon wasn't so serious an injury. The tendon occasionally is harvested for a patient who requires Tommy John surgery and used to replace the damaged elbow ligament.
