Once again, Kris Benson is in a position to pick up the Mets. For the third time in three starts, Benson will pitch following a Mets loss in a game started by Pedro Martinez. He performed poorly in the first two, pitching to an 0-1 record with a 9.58 ERA, as the Mets have lost both games. The team expects more from the man who earlier this season appeared to become the team's No. 2 starter. The Mets will ask for the type of start from Benson that they received on July 24, the day before they began a three-game series in Coors Field that would likely burn their bullpen.

Benson pitched eight scoreless innings against the Dodgers that day.

Nine of Benson's 18 starts have followed Mets losses. He has won six of them. The Mets will ask for a seventh on Wednesday.

"I told him, 'Go play defense without your glove -- you'll probably do a better job." -- Doug Mientkiewicz, after David Wright's barehanded catch in shallow left field in the seventh inning on Tuesday

Quick hits
The last time Pedro Martinez didn't pitch beyond the fifth inning -- aside from a tuneup for the postseason last year -- was May 1 last year against the Rangers. ... Jose Reyes batted .374 in 91 at-bats during his 20-game streak, which equaled the fourth longest in club history. Reyes streak began against the Braves on July 17, and the Mets played the Padres the next three games.
