This Day in Baseball History
July 7, 1948 > The Cleveland Indians sign 42-year-old Negro League legend Satchel Paige to a contract, making him the oldest rookie in Major League history. Although many dismiss the move as a publicity stunt, Paige silences the critics by going 6-1 with a 2.48 ERA. He will be elected to the Hall of Fame in 1971.
